How VFDs Save Energy on Pumps and Fans: What Buyers Should Know

Pumps and fans are the most common — and among the most energy-hungry — devices in industrial plants. The traditional method regulates flow or air volume with valves and dampers: the motor always runs at full speed and the excess work is 'choked off' by the valve, wasted. A variable frequency drive (VFD) takes a different path: it adjusts the motor speed directly so output matches real demand, saving energy at the source.
1. Why pumps and fans are ideal for VFD savings
A fan or pump's power draw scales roughly with the cube (or square) of speed: ease off the speed a little and consumption drops a lot. Replacing 'throttling' with 'speed control' often unlocks substantial savings — commonly 20%–50% in typical setups.
