PV550 Solar Pump Inverter: What It Is and Where to Use It (Agriculture, Livestock, Village Water)
Times:2026-09-01 Views:13
The HBDTECH PV550 is a solar pump inverter (solar VFD) built exclusively for photovoltaic water pumping. It converts DC power from solar panels into variable-frequency AC to drive a water pump directly — with MPPT, automatic PV/AC switching, water-level detection and dry-run protection. It is intended for three off-grid water scenarios: agricultural irrigation, livestock drinking water, and village / community water supply.
Key features
| Item | PV550 spec / capability |
|---|---|
| Motor control | Sensorless vector control; speed accuracy ~±1 rpm at 100% torque; torque response <20 ms |
| Starting torque | 150% starting torque at 0.3 Hz (sensorless vector control) |
| Input | Solar PV DC input; AC grid / generator backup with automatic switching |
| MPPT | Accurate, fast maximum-power-point tracking; manual set or auto tracking |
| Water management | Water-level detection (digital / analog); dry-run and light-load protection, auto dormancy |
| Communication | RS485 / Modbus |
| Protection | Over-voltage, over-current, under-voltage, overload and other complete protections |
| Display | Live PV power, PV DC current and operating parameters |
| Operating mode | Automatic all-day or manual control; sunrise/sunset scheduling ("sunrise income") |
| Pump compatibility | 3-phase asynchronous induction motors (submersible & surface), sized by motor power |
Where the PV550 is used (and where it is not)
The PV550 is a pump-dedicated solar inverter, limited to three water scenarios:
- Agricultural irrigation — solar-powered pumping for farms, orchards and greenhouses;
- Livestock drinking water — drinking water for pasture and livestock farms;
- Village water supply — solar water stations and community water points.
Boundary note: the PV550 is not a general-purpose industrial VFD and is not used for general industrial automation control panels, panel/build enclosures, or "solar pump control panel" combinations. For control-panel / OEM variable-frequency needs, use the HBDTECH 550 series general VFD or the PLC/HMI all-in-one.
PV550 vs a general-purpose VFD
| Item | PV550 solar pump inverter | General VFD (e.g. 550 series) |
|---|---|---|
| Input | Solar DC + AC backup, auto switch | AC grid input |
| MPPT | Built-in, tracks PV max power | None |
| Water level / dry-run | Built-in detection & dry-run protection | None (external only) |
| Typical use | Off-grid solar pumping (irrigation / drinking / village) | General motor speed control, automation |
FAQ
Q1: Can the PV550 run without grid power?
Yes. The PV550 runs primarily on solar DC input in fully off-grid mode; grid or generator is only AC backup and switches in automatically on outage.
Q2: Does the PV550 work with any water pump?
It drives 3-phase asynchronous induction motors (submersible or surface). Select the PV550 model by the connected pump motor power.
Q3: How does it prevent dry running?
Water-level detection (digital or analog input) judges the level; combined with dry-run protection and light-load auto dormancy, it stops the pump when the level is too low.
Q4: Can the PV550 be used as a general industrial VFD?
No. The PV550 is solar-pump dedicated. For general speed control / automation, use the HBDTECH 550 series general VFD.
Q5: What communication is supported?
RS485 / Modbus, for connecting to a supervisory system or HMI to read operating parameters.
Q6: Where is it typically deployed?
Off-grid irrigation, livestock and village water projects, especially in sunny regions such as Southeast Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Latin America.
